Summer fellowships for undergraduates

The Water Center has developed the summer fellowship program to provide research experience to undergraduates at any college or university in Virginia who are pursuing a degree in areas related to water resources.

Up to three fellowships of  $2,500 each for student stipend and $500 to faculty sponsors for discretionary use related to the project are awarded each year. The stipend will be paid over a period of any ten weeks between May 15 and August 30 or may be credited toward fall tuition if so desired.

Rising seniors with outstanding qualifications from any discipline with interest in water resources are eligible to apply.

Selection criteria:

  • good academic record;
  • two letters of reference;
  • letter of support from a faculty sponsor (research advisor);
  • a 300 word essay about interest in water resources and professional goals;
  • a brief description of plan of work for summer fellowship.

Student obligations:

  • full time work under the supervision of  faculty sponsor for the ten week period or equivalent, and
  • submission of final reports detailing research objectives, methods, and results to the Water Center for consideration as a possible special publication of the center.
