New MS Degree Program in Water Resources at Virginia Tech is Approved

A new M.S. degree program in Water Resources at Virginia Tech has been officially approved! Proposed by Drs. Stephen Schoenholtz and Kevin McGuire of the Virginia Water Resources Research Center, the program was approved on March 17 and is slated to begin in Fall 2026. The degree is designed to provide advanced training in water resources by integrating environmental and social science perspectives, equipping students to address the complex challenges of sustainable water management. As the first program of its kind in Virginia, it will emphasize innovative education and interdisciplinary research.

Both thesis and non-thesis in-person options are available to meet a diversity of student training objectives and career aspirations. The M.S. degree program in Water Resources will be offered through the Graduate School and jointly administered in collaboration with the Virginia Water Resources Research Center and faculty across the University. This program will offer an approach in which students are still affiliated with home departments of their major professors and focus areas of research and coursework but will enroll in core graduate coursework with students from numerous other home departments representing an interdisciplinary cohort of water resource students.

Be on the lookout for more details as they become available!
