Project Report from 2016 Student Grant Recipient Carrie Jensen

In 2016, Ph.D. student Carrie Jensen was one of the three Virginia Water Resources Research Center Grant Recipients for her project “Headwater stream length dynamics during storm events in the Valley and Ridge Province.” Her grant was used to purchase stream intermittency sensors that revealed the timing and pattern of stream flow in headwaters after storms.  Headwater streams carry water, sediment, organic matter, and pollutants to downstream waterways, and much of this transmission occurs episodically during storms when stream levels are high. With data from the sensors, the researchers can help predict where and when streams in similar settings will carry flow for a given storm to aid watershed management efforts.
