Welcome to New Virginia Water Center Director Dr. Kevin McGuire

Welcome Dr. Kevin McGuire as the new director of the Virginia Water Resources Research Center! Dr. McGuire began his new role as director of the Water Center in April.

Dr. McGuire served as the Center’s associate director for 14 years before becoming director, and he is also a professor of hydrology at Virginia Tech in the Department of Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation

“I am honored to be named the director of the Water Center and to have the opportunity to continue working with talented and productive faculty in water-related research at Virginia Tech and throughout the Commonwealth. We are fortunate to have so many outstanding academic water scientists, engineers, and professionals in Virginia whose expertise is instrumental in addressing the formidable challenges confronting our water resources.”

Dr. McGuire takes over following the retirement of Director Stephen Schoenholtz, a professor emeritus in the Virginia Tech Department of Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation. In April, Dr. Schoenholtz retired after more than 17 years as the Center’s director.

The mission of the Water Center is to foster collaboration, cutting-edge research, and knowledge sharing within the water research community and beyond. “This work also involves training and mentoring students to become our future leaders in understanding and managing water resources. I am looking forward to finding new ways for the Water Center to lead in these efforts,” says McGuire.

As part of his academic appointment, Dr. McGuire will teach a class in watershed hydrology and continue working with students majoring in Virginia Tech’s water resources B.S. degree program. His research focuses on the dynamics of mountain streams, forest hydrology, watershed management, and runoff processes.

Before joining the Water Center, Dr. McGuire held positions as an assistant professor in the Center for the Environment at Plymouth State University, as a research hydrologist with the USDA Forest Service, and as a postdoctoral fellow in Civil and Environmental Engineering with the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Dr. McGuire received his B.S. from Susquehanna University, his M.S. from the Pennsylvania State University, and his Ph.D. from Oregon State University.
